Ojai Has A Problem: Here's How We're Solving It.

We are Ojais Green Valley Project Youth Council, we encourage the next generation to care for the environment by tackling different environmental projects in and around the Ojai Valley each session, this session is no different.

Last session the Youth Council assessed a problem in Ojai, heat. Through the use of satellite imaging they were able to determine several places that were far hotter than average in town; these hotspots are referred to as "urban heat islands". The reason these areas are hotter than others is because of a lack of any foliage in an urban environment, each of the spots that were assessed were totally barren.

The solution we came up with? Trees. The planting of trees in an area provides shade and reduces heat providing a kind of natural temperature control. Other reasons to plant trees include that they can beautify an area, provide habitat for local wildlife and provide us with clean air to breathe! After our initial assessment we were approved by the city to plant in several of the areas which we hope will lead to these areas becoming cooler in the future.

Anyone who's been in town understands the heat problem you experience it going about your daily life. This is why we want to reach out to you, the community, to help us in our goal. To help solve this issue you can join us during our community tree plantings at the dates, times and locations below.
