The C.R.E.W.'s Green Valley Project (GVP) Oxnard Youth Council is combining environmental education, artistic expression, and hands-on conservation to inspire greater awareness of Oxnard's natural environment. Through this project, Youth Council members are exploring the importance of native plants, learning about the region's Chumash heritage, and discovering ways to encourage environmental stewardship within their community. Using nature journals, outdoor exploration, and creative activities, students are documenting their observations and developing ideas for a community mural that will celebrate Oxnard's natural environment and inspire others to protect it.

Native Plants & Community Mural Project

Work Completed So Far

Oxnard Youth Council members have participated in environmental education activities, outdoor explorations, and hands-on conservation projects to deepen their understanding of local ecosystems.

Throughout the program, students have:

  • Explored native plant habitats: Visited local natural areas, including Ormond Beach, to identify native plants and learn about their importance to local ecosystems.

  • Learned from environmental mentors: Worked with mentors to develop plant identification skills and better understand the relationship between native species, wildlife, and healthy habitats.

  • Created nature journals: Used drawings, written observations, and research to document native plants, wildlife, and environmental features they encounter.

  • Developed observation and research skills: Read educational materials, practiced identifying species, and explored how environmental conditions influence their surroundings.

  • Participated in community tree planting: Collaborated with the GVP Ojai Youth Council on a tree-planting project, gaining hands-on experience in environmental restoration and community stewardship.

  • Explored art as environmental education: Began developing creative ideas inspired by their nature journals to communicate the importance of protecting Oxnard's natural environment.

These experiences have helped students connect environmental science with creativity while building a stronger appreciation for their community and its natural resources.

What’s Next?

The Oxnard Youth Council is working toward its culminating project: a community mural inspired by Oxnard's native plants, wildlife, and natural landscapes.

Using the drawings, research, and observations collected in their nature journals, students will develop a mural design that reflects what they have learned throughout the program.

The mural will serve as both a public artwork and an educational opportunity, highlighting the importance of native plants, celebrating local biodiversity, and encouraging community members to become more connected to the environment around them.

As the project progresses, Youth Council members will work together to transform their individual ideas into a collaborative design and bring their vision to life.

Through this project, students hope to leave a lasting contribution to Oxnard that inspires residents to appreciate, explore, and care for their local environment.
